The Cow, Dariush Mehrjui’s 1969 black and white masterpiece, co-written with Gholam Hossein Saedi, is widely considered a landmark of Iranian cinema. Set in an impoverished remote village, the film centres on Masht "Mashti" Hassan, whose beloved cow is his world. While he's away on a visit to the capital, the cow dies mysteriously and the villagers, fearing Mashti's reaction upon his return, try to convince him that the cow wandered off. Grief stricken, Mashti spirals into madness. This screening is dedicated to the memory of Dariush Mehrjui and writer Vahideh Mohammadifar, who were murdered in October 2023.
